A Label by Any Other Name

Hi There!

I hope you are having a great Sunday. Today, I want to chat with you guys about something that has me scratching my head at times and that is name brand clothing. Does brand name =quality?

I was engaged in banter with someone fairly recently and she was adamant that both sides of the equation are equal. Here is my thought, no. I am a huge proponent of being penny wise.  I am a mum of three – enough said.  Don’t get me wrong, I love designer/name brand things but I cannot always afford to splurge on designer items but I still want quality and to look good. Moreover, I have had designer clothing that has fallen apart on me, leaving me rather upset to put it lightly.  That being the case, when I shop for clothing I inspect tags for fabric content, seams for finishing, and fabric texture for comfort.  Why? Because therein lay the keys to assessing a garment’s quality. I guess I also have my Nigerian background to thank for this ability to assess clothing. While “ready-made” clothing was available when I was growing up, it was very common place to have clothing made just for you.  As part of the process, one would shop for the material, shop for a decent tailor and assess the quality of his/her work, which is what drove the price one paid – no designer label included.

I am certainly not suggesting that you get your clothing custom made –“This is America Jack!” (I could not resist the Coming to America reference).  What I am suggesting is that you look beyond the designer label otherwise you might miss some great fashion finds.

I am curious, what are your thoughts? Join the conversation. Leave me a comment below.

Keeping it simply stylish,

Abi

  1. I agree, when it comes to clothing it’s more about the quality not who’s name is on the label. You can find really great pieces of clothing, if you take the time to look (in store or online) and be creative with the parings. You can look like a million bucks on a $50-$100 budget.
